Original documents

On the day of your ceremony you must bring along your original:

  • proof of ID documents (for both of you)
  • signed and witnessed NOIM.

If you don’t bring all the necessary original documents, your ceremony may be cancelled or moved to another date.

Witnesses

You must have at least 2 witnesses at your ceremony who sign the marriage certificate. Your witnesses can be family or friends and do not need to be Australian citizens.

They need to:

  • be 18 or older
  • speak and understand English
  • be at the entire ceremony.

We cannot supply witnesses for you.

If you or your partner do not speak or understand English, you will need to bring along an interpreter to the ceremony.

An interpreter can be either:

or

  • someone who understands and speaks both languages and is not one of the people getting married or one of the witnesses.

Your celebrant will ask them to sign a statutory declaration of their ability to interpret on the day of your ceremony.

On arrival, you’ll meet your celebrant.

They will check all your original documents and NOIM to make sure all legal requirements have been met, and that information provided is correct.

Before your ceremony your celebrant will:

  • meet with you both separately to sign the declaration of no legal impediment
  • confirm who your witnesses are for the ceremony.

During the ceremony:

  • your celebrant will say and ask you both to say certain words which are required by law to make your marriage legal
  • both of you, along with your celebrant and 2 witnesses will sign the ceremonial certificate and official certificate of marriage. You will receive your ceremonial certificate on the day.

After the ceremony:

  • your celebrant will print your official marriage certificate.

A legal-only ceremony is designed to be quick and fuss free—you have the room for 15 minutes.

When you arrive your celebrant must check that you have met all legal requirements before marrying you.

When the ceremony is over, your celebrant will register your marriage and print an official marriage certificate.
